Da un po’ di tempo vedete il banner di questo tour in alto a destra nella pagina perché da qualche tempo mi sto dedicando alla lettura di The Midnight Sea, un particolare fantasy (in lingua inglese) che ha saputo conquistarmi per le atmosfere e i personaggi inconsueti che l’autrice è riuscita a creare.

Innanzitutto, come anticipato, The Midnight Sea è un romanzo fantasy in lingua inglese la cui terminologia – dovuta prevalentemente alle numerose creature che lo popolano – può risultare ai meno “navigati” inizialmente un po’ ostica essendo ognuno di loro originale e dettagliatamente costruito.
Data la dovuta premessa, dopo un inizio un po’ complicato la narrazione diventa fluida e ci da modo di entrare nel mondo di Nazafareen. La protagonista di questo romanzo ha subito una grave perdita, la sorella è stata uccisa dai mostri che popolano il suo mondo per cui, quando le viene proposto di entrare a far parte dei Water Dog, un gruppo di soldati prescelti con il compito di proteggere le persone dai demoni, coglie la palla al balzo e si arruola con l’obiettivo ben preciso di vendicarsi.
La particolarità dei Water Dogs è che collaborano con alcuni demoni, i Daevas, avversari che li aiutano a carpire informazioni e conoscenze necessarie per stanarli. E’ così che Nazafareen si trova a legare – in senso letterale – con Darius, un Daeva dall’aspetto umano ma dal grande potere; legame che consente ad entrambi una strana interconnessione.
Niente, quindi, è come immaginava Nazafareen e la ragazza non sa più di chi può (o deve) fidarsi e, soprattutto, dove sia la verità.
Ed è forse il viaggio interiore della protagonista la parte centrale di questo particolare romanzo costruito in un mondo unico, inquietante e oscuro. Nazafareen compie un percorso non solo fisico ma soprattutto passerà da ragazza a donna e, ancora più importante, sarà portata a riflettere sul sentimento di vendetta che l’ha inizialmente spronata, spingendola a costruirsi una propria bussola morale che le indichi cosa è giusto e cosa è sbagliato.
Il worldbuilnding, come già accennato, è estremamente particolareggiato e singolare, tratteggiato in maniera chiara e dettagliata. Data l’iniziale difficoltà con la lingua, dopo però il 5/6 capitolo si riuscirà a seguire perfettamente la storia senza risentirne.
Lo stile dell’autrice è particolare ma ben studiato e calibrato, un libro incantevole, un primo romanzo che incuriosisce e spinge a richiedere a gran voce un seguito.
