Il Diario degli Angeli: intervista a Lili St. Crow, anteprima Betrayals

Per Newton & Compton è uscito in giugno “Il Diario degli Angeli. Creature della notte”. Si tratta del primo libro della nuova serie YA della scrittrice Lilith Saintcrow che per l’occasione ha utilizzato un nome leggermente diverso.

I libri nascono in due modi. Il primo è quello che chiamo il metodo “What if”, dove mi faccio una domanda: cosa succederebbe se un bibliotecario trovasse una cassa di libri magici, per esempio, e basta andare avanti da lì. Il secondo è quello che io chiamo “organico”. Sto facendo qualcos’altro, e tutto d’un tratto mi compare un’immagine molto forte nella mente. Non esiterei a chiamarla allucinazione, perché per alcuni momenti sono letteralmente là, in questo altro mondo. Tale immagine si rivela la genesi della storia. Nel caso di Strange Angels (in Italia “Il Diario degli Angeli”), stavo pensando ad altro, e tutto ad un tratto sono stata interrotta da questa immagine di una ragazza in piedi nel mezzo di una cucina, con scatole accatastate intorno a lei. Stava fissando, con uno sguardo di puro orrore, la porta sul retro. L’immagine cambia angolazione, e all’improvviso ho potuto vedere cosa stava guardando – un cadavere in decomposizione, che tamburellava sul vetro della porta, neve e ghiaccio nei suoi capelli. E io sapevo improvvisamente tre cose: che il suo nome era Dru, che il cadavere era suo padre, e che era in terribile, terribile pericolo. Il resto sono solo stata io a scriverlo, cercando di immaginare chi fosse questa ragazza e perché così tante cose la volevano morta.

Books come to me in two ways. The first is what I call the “what if” type, where I take a question–what would happen if a librarian found a cache of magical books, for example–and just go from there. The second is what I call “organic”–I will be doing something else, and all of a sudden I will have a very strong mental image. I wouldn’t hesitate to call it a hallucination, because for a few moments I am literally there, in this other world. That image turns out to be the genesis for the story. In the case of Strange Angels, I was thinking about something else, and all of a sudden I was interrupted by this image of a teenage girl standing in the middle of a kitchen, with boxes stacked around her. She was staring, with a look of utter horror, at the back door. The angle moved around, and I suddenly could see what she was looking at–a rotting corpse, tapping on the glass part of the door, snow and ice in its hair. And I suddenly knew three things: that her name was Dru, that the corpse was her father, and that she was in terrible, terrible danger. The rest of it was just me writing, trying to figure out who this girl was and why so many things wanted her dead.

2. “Il Diario degli Angeli” si svolge nel nostro mondo ma esiste anche un “Mondo Reale”: può parlarci di questo mondo?

Il Mondo Reale è come lo chiama Dru. Sono affascinata all’idea che ci siano cose nascoste sotto la superficie della vita di ogni giorno. Sempre, nella cronaca o nelle notizie, ci viene detto che gli esseri umani nascondono le cose gli uni agli altri, la scienza ci dice che ciò che vediamo del mondo non è tutto lì e potrebbe anzi essere fuorviante. Quindi, scrivendo del mondo di Dru, dove le cose delle fiabe e degli incubi sono reali e che spesso mordono anche, ero molto interessata ad esplorare cosa potrebbe accadere se le autorità non ne volessero sapere di queste cose, ma poche persone decidessero di reagire. Inoltre, gli adolescenti sentono spesso di vivere come in due mondi – il mondo esterno della scuola e le aspettative, e un mondo interiore che appartiene solo a loro. Credo che i sentimenti di Dru verso il Mondo Reale, siano un riflesso di questo.

The Real World is just what Dru calls it. I’m fascinated by the idea that there are hidden things going on under the surface of everyday life. All the time, in news reports or exposes, we’re told that human beings hide things from each other; science tells us that what we see of the world isn’t all there is to it and might indeed be misleading. So in writing about Dru’s world, where things from fairy tales and nightmares are real and they do often bite back, I was very interested in exploring what might happen if the authorities didn’t want to know about such things, but a few people decided to fight back. Besides, teenagers often feel they live in two worlds–the outer world of school and expectations, and an inner world that belongs to them alone. It seems to me that Dru’s feelings about the Real World are a reflection of that.

3. Dru si è sentita “strana” per molto tempo, finchè non è comparso un Angelo. Chi è Christophe?

Christophe è un Dampyr, metà vampiro e metà umano. E’ vecchio ma è intrappolato nel corpo di un adolescente perché i Dampyr non maturano oltre i 19/22 anni. Lui è anche una specie di emarginato a causa del suo lignaggio, e tutti intorno a lui dubitano della sua lealtà. Penso che lui giochi proprio su questa incertezza, dato che è anche intelligente e molto feroce e sprezzante verso gli stupidi.

Christophe is djamphir–half vampire, half human. He’s old, and he’s trapped in a teenage body–djamphir don’t mature much beyond, say, nineteen to twenty-two. He’s also something of an outcast because of his lineage, and everyone around him is very uncertain of his loyalties. I think he plays on that uncertainty, since he’s also smart and ferocious and very disdainful of fools.

4. Questo è il primo libro di una serie, dove conosciamo i luoghi e i personaggi: puoi raccontarci qualcosa del prossimo libro, che speriamo di poter presto leggere anche in Italia?

Il prossimo libro è “Betrayals” (la traduzione è “Tradimenti”, a lato la copertina americana del libro), anche se credo che sarà chiamato diversamente in italiano! Mi hanno detto che sarà tradotto e pubblicato a breve. In “Betrayals”, Dru dovrebbe essere al sicuro, almeno fino a che si trova all’interno della Schola. Ma le cose non sono sempre quelle che sembrano, e lei potrebbe invece essere davvero in grande pericolo.

The next book is Betrayals, though I think it will be called something different in Italian! I am told it will be translated and published soon. In Betrayals, Dru should be safe, since she’s at a Schola. But things aren’t always what they seem to be, and she might be very unsafe indeed.

5. Quanti libri fanno parte della serie?

Penso che lo stesso editore che ha acquistato Strange Angels compri anche il resto della serie; ci sono 5 libri in tutto.

I believe the same publisher that brought out Strange Angels bought the rights to the rest of the series; there are five books in all.
